Cleveland rocks! The city's reputation precedes you if you're moving to the Greater Cleveland, Ohio area. On the banks of Lake Erie in northeastern Ohio, the cities of Cleveland and nearby Lorain and Elyria make up Greater Cleveland, and the areas's strong culture and vibrant economy have kept Cleveland moving companies busy.

History:
Cleveland was not the most ideal area for settlement, but the Ohio and Erie Canal brought many people into the area and railroads soon reached it. The city almost waged war with nearby Ohio City because of disputes over a bridge between the two. The city was situated between trade routes of coal and iron, which led to further prosperity for the area. Additionally, Cleveland became a large steel center from John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company. The city experienced problems following World War II however, with recession and social tensions. Major riots broke out around the city in 1965 and 1968. And in 1978, the city defaulted on its loans - the first large city to do so since the Great Depression. Revitalization efforts have been underway, especially in the downtown area. Many areas of the city still are experiencing trouble, though, and difficult living conditions.

Economy:
Cleveland's economy is historically tied to coal and steel during the late 1800's and early 1900s. Today, these industries have declined, and the city has not yet fully transitioned into more modern areas. Companies headquartered in the city include National City Corporation, Easton Corporation, and Sherwin Williams Company. Products still produced include steel, missiles, and engines. Research is strong in the city with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and General Electric Laboratory based in the city. Also, growing industries in Cleveland include various law firms and health-care companies.

Tourism:
Cleveland features numerous tourist destinations. Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport is only thirteen miles outside of the city. The Cleveland Institute of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Art are both common places to visit within the city. Museums to visit include the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame, the Western Reserve Historical Society Museum, the Museum of Natural History, and the Cleveland Museum of Arts and Fine Arts Garden. Parks in the city include Wade Park and Rockefeller Park. Sports teams in the area include the Cleveland Browns (NFL), the Cleveland Indians (MLB), the Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA), among several other smaller collegiate and professional teams.

  • Present day Cleveland is named after General Moses Cleaveland.
  • A newspaper editor dropped the original 'a' in the city's name (Cleaveland) because it made the name of the city too long for the local newspaper at the time.
  • Cleveland is typically a politically democratic city because of the many labor unions within the city, and it's one of the most democratic areas in the state.
  • Key Tower is the highest skyscraper in the city of Cleveland.
  • Cleveland Clinic is the largest employer in the city and is world renowned for its treatment and research
  • Cleveland State University
  • Cuyahoga Community College
  • Case Western Reserve University
  • John Carroll University
  • David Myers College
  • Cleveland Institute of Art
  • Ohio Technical College
  • Cleveland Institute of Music
  • Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine
