Largo is located in the Tampa Bay area, and has a population of about 73,000. The climate is typical of Florida, with summer highs in the low 90s and the winters are very mild with temps in the high 50s and low 60s. Close to spectacular beaches, Largo is also a wonderful city of nature walks and lovely neighborhoods. The downtown area has undergone rejuvenation, and there are wonderful parks everywhere. Anyone thinking of moving to Largo will discover a metropolitan city with a small town charm.

Economy:
The median household income for Largo is lower than that of the state in general. The cost of living here is lower than the national average. Largo is home to Tech Data, one of the world's largest wholesale distributors of technology products. Tech Data is the city's largest employer. Other top employers include Special Data Processing, SCC Soft Computer and Suntasia Marketing.

History:
The area was first inhabited by the Timucua Indians and these people repelled any attempt to settle in the area until disease brought by European explores virtually wiped out the tribe. The first known European settler to the area was Count Odet Philippe who had been a surgeon in Napoleon's army. Settlers soon were planting citrus and vegetables and raising cattle. In 1886 the railroad arrived, and they would not build a stop near the town unless it had a name. There are various reports as to how the name ‘Largo' was chosen. However it was chosen, it seemed a better choice than the other name offered: Luluville. The city was incorporated in 1905 and was soon shipping its citrus all over. The area was devastated by hard freezes in the 20s and then was hit hard by the depression. However, after World War II, soldiers returning home discovered the area and the population increased greatly. Another bad freeze in 1962 marked the end of the citrus industry.

Tourism:
The Florida Holocaust Museum houses permanent exhibits honoring the millions who lost their lives during the holocaust. The Armed Forces Military Museum takes you back in time to discover what it was like to fight for our country's freedom. The Pinewood Cultural Park has Heritage Village, a 21-acre living history museum, the 150-acre Florida Botanical Gardens and the Gulf Coast Museum of Art, housing Florida arts and crafts in nine permanent collections. In the center of downtown is the Largo Central Park and Cultural Center featuring live entertainment and concerts. The Pinellas Trail offers a 34 mile corridor of trails, biking and hiking. You can visit the National Comedy Hall of Fame. The Heart of Pinellas Festival begins in February. In addition you have all the attractions and events that Tampa Bay has to offer.

  • In the late 1800s, Largo was known as ‘Citrus City.'
